Narration:

When reading in detail, there are a number of points you need to consider. First, synonyms. Synonyms can be used to express the same information, but using different vocabulary. For example, in the question, we see experts suggest, in the reading text, this is changed to specialists advise. Needed has changed to required; debate has changed to discussion, and concluded has become close. As well as synonyms, we will also need to think about antonyms – words which have an opposite meaning. For example – here, valuable has been turned to the antonym worthless. A third point you need to consider is prefixes. For example, the prefix here means two – biannual. More difficult questions in the IELTS reading test will often deliberately disguise meanings so that only the stronger candidates are able to get the correct answer. Throughout the reading course we will present and practise many of the common ways in which IELTS will test your skills in this area. Try to build your knowledge of vocabulary as much as you can before your IELTS test. Throughout this course, we will look at a wide range of vocabulary, and the exercises in the vocabulary section are also a useful way of building your knowledge. [On the next page is a list of prefixes which you can use to help you build your understanding of a passage].
