Use them the right way round. Read the question, write your own answer, and only then read the model. Reading the model first tells you very little about your own writing, because everything looks obvious once someone has done it.

A model answer shows you the target. If you want to see the gap between a real candidate answer and that target, the band sample answers carry every examiner correction marked on the candidate's own text.
