The settlement and citizenship level. Twenty two minutes, with a planning task the lower levels do not have. With a practice exercise.
IELTS Life Skills B1 is the highest of the three Life Skills levels. It takes 22 minutes, covers speaking and listening only, and is the level required for indefinite leave to remain and for British citizenship.
B1 is where the test stops being about everyday transactions and starts asking you to handle ideas. You need to show contrast, cause, reason and purpose, narrate events, ask about the past and the future, and talk about how certain or possible something is.
There is also one structural difference the lower levels do not have. At B1 you plan an activity with the other candidate. That task is collaborative by design, and it fails for both of you if either one goes quiet.
A B1 pass can normally be used for both settlement and citizenship, so it is worth getting right first time.
Focus
The same three abilities, now with formality and reasoning attached.
You need to listen and respond to straightforward information and narratives, and follow explanations and instructions through to the end.
B1 is the first level where the register you choose is part of the assessment. Speaking to a stranger is not the same as speaking to a friend.
You need to make points that are relevant, and respond to what the other person actually said rather than to what you had planned to say.
The conversation has to arrive somewhere. Two people talking past each other will not pass this.
B1 has an additional task where you and the other candidate plan an activity. It is not present at A1 or A2.
You can write notes while you listen. They are not marked.
Method
Five functions that A1 and A2 do not require.
This is a language demand as much as a task. You need however, although, because, so that and in order to, used accurately.
Telling a short story about something that happened, in order, in past tenses that hold together.
Forming questions about the past and the future, not just answering them. Question formation is where B1 candidates often slip.
The difference between will, might, could and probably. Getting this wrong makes you sound more certain than you mean to be.
The additional B1 task. You and the other candidate decide together what will happen and in what order.
Describing, comparing, prioritising, persuading, agreeing and disagreeing all still appear.
Practice
Five questions on the B1 format and what it adds.
Formality. The register you choose is assessed for the first time.
Linking. You need contrast, cause, reason and purpose, used accurately.
The planning task. You and the other candidate have to arrive at a shared plan, not just take turns speaking.
1How long does the Life Skills B1 test take?
22 minutes. It is the longest of the three Life Skills tests, largely because of the additional planning task.
2Which task appears at B1 but not at A1 or A2?
Planning an activity with the other candidate. It is the one structural addition at B1, and it is collaborative, so it needs both of you to contribute.
3Which visa routes accept a Life Skills B1 pass?
Indefinite leave to remain and citizenship. Both sit at B1, so one pass normally covers both. Work and study routes need IELTS for UKVI instead.
4Which sentence best shows the linking B1 expects?
Although it costs more, I would choose it because it lasts longer. That single sentence shows contrast and reason, which are exactly the functions B1 asks for.
5The other candidate is barely speaking during the planning task. What should you do?
Ask them questions to bring them in. Asking about past and future events is a B1 task type, and engaging in discussion is part of what you are assessed on. Doing it all yourself is not discussion.
That makes B1 the level worth preparing for properly, because a fail means booking again, waiting again and paying again on an application that already has a timeline.

B1 on the Common European Framework of Reference, the intermediate level. It expects you to handle contrast, cause, reason and purpose, and to narrate events.
Indefinite leave to remain and British citizenship both require B1. A single pass can normally be used for both.
22 minutes, taken in one session with an examiner and one other candidate. It is the longest of the three Life Skills levels.
You plan an activity with the other candidate. This task does not appear at A1 or A2, and it requires both candidates to contribute.
Normally yes, since both sit at B1. Confirm on gov.uk for your own application before relying on it.
You cannot retake the same level for two years. Since a pass cannot be improved on, there is no reason to want to.
