IELTS
What is actually free, what only looks free, and where the line honestly sits. No signup and no card on this site.
Searching for free IELTS practice online turns up a lot of results, and most of them mean something different by free. Some want an email address, some want a card for a trial, and some give you a sample and charge for the rest.
This page sets out what is genuinely available without paying, including on this site, and is equally clear about where the free material stops. That line exists everywhere; the only question is whether a site tells you where it is.
What free means
Six models, from genuinely open to free in name only.
Everything readable and usable without signing in. Rarer than it sounds, and it is how this site works: no account, no card, nothing held back behind a login.
Open once you hand over an email address. Usually fine, but expect marketing, and your address has a value the site is collecting.
A real free tier plus paid features. Honest when the split is stated up front, frustrating when you find the boundary halfway through a test.
Free for seven days, card required. Useful if you will actually use it in that week, and easy to forget to cancel.
One test free, the rest paid. Reasonable, but a single sample tells you little about whether the material is any good.
The organisations that run IELTS publish free sample questions and familiarisation material. Limited in quantity, but it is the real thing, so it is worth doing early.
Method
Six checks before you spend time on any site, including this one.
An answer key tells you that you were wrong. An explanation tells you why, and only the second one changes your score.
Forty questions, sixty minutes for reading, one play only for listening. Material that ignores the timing does not prepare you for the hardest part of the test.
Free IELTS material is often produced by people who have never marked an IELTS paper. It is worth knowing whose judgement you are working from.
Be careful here. Writing is judged against four criteria, and any site offering that at no cost is either using automated scoring or is about to ask for money.
One sample test is a demonstration, not preparation. You need enough volume to find your weak question types.
Every free site is selling something, this one included. Advertising pays for the material here, and full membership on our sister site is what we point you towards. Knowing the model tells you how to read the advice.
Practice
Five questions about getting value from free material.
Free material can take you a long way in reading and listening, because those have right answers you can check.
Writing and speaking are different, because they are judged rather than marked. That is the line, and it is the same line on every site.
1Which two papers can free material fully prepare you for?
Reading and listening. Both convert a raw score to a band, so you can mark yourself accurately. Writing and speaking are judged against four criteria and cannot be self-marked reliably.
2A site offers a free full-length test but asks for your email first. Is that free?
Both are defensible. No money changes hands, but an email address has a value and the site knows it. What matters is whether they tell you before you start.
3Which is more useful in free reading material?
Three tests with explanations. Volume without review teaches very little. Knowing why an answer was wrong is what changes the next score.
4A free tool says it will give your essay a band score instantly. What should you assume?
It is automated. That is genuinely useful for spotting patterns and for practising often, provided you know what you are getting rather than assuming a person read it.
5What is the single best use of free IELTS material?
Finding your weak question types. That is what free practice is genuinely good for, and it is the thing that tells you where any further effort should go.
That usually means volume without review. Doing one test properly, then working out why every wrong answer was wrong, is worth more than five tests skimmed.

Free material finds your weak spots. Fixing writing and speaking is where it runs out, on every site.
IELTStestONLINE keeps every score you get in one place, gives you an estimated band as you work, and assesses your writing and speaking against the four criteria so you can see where you stand before test day. See what full membership includes
IELTS.GG is now GoPrep, and its own site describes it as formerly IELTS.GG. It is an AI preparation platform, and its app listing shows in-app purchases, so check their current pricing directly. If you are looking for material that is open with no account and no card, everything on this site works that way.
The organisations that run IELTS publish official free sample and familiarisation material, which is worth doing first because it is the real thing. Beyond that, this site has full practice tests, question type guides and downloadable books, all open without an account.
Some are, including this one. The useful question is what the site is selling instead: advertising, an email list, or an upgrade. Knowing which tells you how to read its advice.
Not by a person. Writing is judged against four criteria, which takes trained time, so a free offer means automated scoring. That is useful if you know that is what you are getting.
Enough to find which question types you lose marks on, which is usually three or four full tests properly reviewed. Beyond that, more tests without feedback stop adding anything.

Reading and listening you can mark yourself, and this site gives you enough of both. Writing and speaking are judged against four criteria, and that is the part no free page anywhere can do for you.
IELTStestONLINE assesses your writing and speaking against the four IELTS criteria, instantly and as often as you like, using a system built by a former IELTS examiner and examiner trainer. It keeps every score in one place with an estimated band, and it carries no advertising.
