Meaning: As well as; plus 

Common use 1: Needs to be both at the beginning and in the middle of a sentence.

Grammar: First part of linking word + auxiliary verb (e.g. do, have, would) + complete clause + comma  + but (optional) + pronoun + also + verb + object

Example: Not only do many hospitals raise money privately, (but) they also receive government subsidies.
